Overview
HMS Duke of York, the third battleship of the King George V class, was laid down in 1937 at Clydebank and entered service in November 1941. The ship participated in convoy operations, covering the Allied landings in North Africa in 1942. On December 26, 1943, it sank the German battleship Scharnhorst. Later, after a major overhaul, it served as the flagship of the Pacific Fleet, and from 1947 to 1949, as the flagship of the Home Fleet.
