Overview
In the mid-1930s, the United States was developing a battleship with characteristics that would not violate the limitations of the London Naval Treaty. At the end of 1935, several designs for such a ship were presented to the leadership of the US Navy. The variants differed in displacement, armor, and armament: from classic ships with superfiring main battery turrets to hybrid battleships with a flight deck. For further development, variant K was selected. In November of the same year, five versions of this variant were presented. One of them proposed a ship with two triple turrets in the bow, arranged in a superfiring position, and one in the stern. The belt thickness was reduced, which allowed for an increase in maximum speed. The project was not realized, and its further development led to the emergence of the North Carolina-class battleships.
