Overview
Dido-class cruisers were built in Britain from 1937 to 1942. These were ships for squadron service and escort, whose main task was seen as the anti-aircraft defense of formations. For this purpose, 5.25-inch universal guns in twin mounts were chosen as the main battery. Such guns were used on King George V-class battleships. Eleven ships were built to the original design and another five to an improved design (also known as Bellona or Black Prince). During World War II, six of the sixteen cruisers were lost or not restored after heavy damage. In the 1940s–50s, some ships were sold to New Zealand and Pakistan. The Royal Malaysian Navy also received several foreign ships after the war, including from Britain. It is quite possible that these cruisers were considered for acquisition by Malaysia.
