Overview
The Aoba-class cruisers were originally intended to replicate the Furutaka class; however, at the insistence of the Japanese Navy General Staff, a series of changes were made to the design. Thus, the single-gun main battery turrets were replaced with twin-gun turrets, the 76-mm anti-aircraft guns were replaced with new 120-mm ones, and a catapult for seaplanes was installed between the aft superstructure and the turret. The lead ship of the class, Aoba, was built in Nagasaki. Between 1938 and 1940, the cruiser underwent a modernization that included strengthening its anti-aircraft armament and converting all boilers to oil-firing. The ship actively participated in World War II: it landed troops on Guam and Wake Island, fought in the Coral Sea, off Savo Island, at Cape Esperance, and also escorted convoys. The cruiser Aoba sank in Kure harbor after being bombed by Allied forces on July 24, 1945.
