Overview
USS Benson, the lead ship of its class, was built at the Fore River Shipyard. In 1940–41, it was part of the Neutrality Patrol. From the start of US involvement in World War II, it escorted convoys in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean, supported the Allied landing in Italy. In 1945, it was transferred to the Pacific, escorting American carriers. Awarded four battle stars during the war. In 1954, the ship was transferred to Taiwan, where it was named Loyang.
