Overview
Within the framework of cooperation between the USSR and Italy in the naval field in the 1930s, the Ansaldo firm prepared a package of blueprints for the Soviet side. The proposed projects included two versions of a battleship with a displacement of 42,000 and 28,000 tons, two versions of a battlecruiser, and one armored leader. Among the Italian projects was a blueprint for a battlecruiser with a standard displacement of 22,000 tons. Such a cruiser, according to Italian designers, was to carry powerful armament of nine 10-inch guns, have a four-shaft layout with 60,000 hp per shaft, allowing the ship to develop relatively high speed. A ship built in Italy as a result of this project's development could have received traditional Italian cruiser armament: 203 mm guns in quadruple mounts.
