Overview
USS Kidd, a Fletcher-class destroyer, made its first passage through New York Harbor with the Jolly Roger flying at the mast. In the Pacific, the ship participated in covering landings on Bougainville, the Gilbert Islands, and the Marshall Islands. The destroyer participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Okinawa. USS Kidd became one of three ships selected by the Navy for preservation as memorials. In May 1982, the destroyer was towed to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for conversion into a naval museum and memorial.
