Overview
In 1961, the Peruvian Navy received two destroyers from the U.S. Navy as part of a military assistance program. This program was renewable, and in the 1970s, it was planned to acquire several more warships, including several Fletcher or Gearing-class destroyers. However, the Peruvian government decided to allocate the funds designated for naval development to the construction of frigates in Italy. In the event of continued close cooperation with the United States and the transfer of Fletcher-class destroyers, these ships would have received traditional names for the Peruvian Navy—in honor of outstanding naval officers, such as Vice Admiral Melitón Carvajal.
