Overview
The USS Indiana, the second battleship of the South Dakota class, was built at the Newport News shipyard. Immediately after crew training, the ship was dispatched to the Pacific Theater of Operations. From 1943 to 1945, with a break for repairs, the battleship participated in the battles for Tarawa and Kwajalein, the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, as well as the landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In September 1945, the ship returned to the United States and was transferred to the Pacific Reserve Fleet. In 1956–57, there was a plan to rearm the Indiana with anti-aircraft missiles: it was proposed to replace all three main battery turrets with launchers for RIM-8 Talos and RIM-24 Tartar missiles. The conversion was abandoned due to its excessive cost.
