Overview
The further development of the Admiral Hipper-class cruisers, unconstrained by 'Washington' limitations, could have been ships armed with four triple turrets with 203 mm guns. Such gun mounts had already been developed for possible installation on raider ships. Twelve 203 mm guns would have made the new German cruisers the strongest in their class until the appearance of the American Des Moines-class ships with rapid-fire mounts. However, priorities in shipbuilding were given to submarines, and such a ship was not built in Germany.
