Overview
Z-39, a Type 1936A destroyer, was built at the Germaniawerft shipyard in Kiel. The ship entered service in August 1943 but was ready for combat only in January 1944 due to errors during construction. In March 1944, the destroyer was transferred to Tallinn as part of the 6th Destroyer Flotilla, where it participated in mine-laying and shelling Soviet troops. In June, the ship was damaged by Soviet aviation and was under repair until February 1945. After returning to service, the destroyer escorted convoys evacuating troops and civilians from East Prussia and Courland. After World War II, Z-39 was transferred to the US Navy, where the ship received the name DD-939 and was used for research on the power plant with high-pressure boilers. In 1948, the ship passed to France, where it was renamed Q-128. The former German destroyer was used as a donor for spare parts and as a pontoon for minesweepers.
