Overview
According to the plans of Operation 'Peking,' ORP Błyskawica, along with its sister ship ORP Grom, broke through to Great Britain in September 1939, where it underwent modernization to operate in the North Atlantic. In 1940, the ship took part in the Norwegian campaign and the Dunkirk evacuation. The destroyer participated in convoy and patrol operations in the Atlantic, escorting troop transports. In 1944, Błyskawica fought against German destroyers in the Battle of Ushant, covering the landing troops in Normandy. After being handed over to the new Polish government, the destroyer was modernized, with its main and anti-aircraft guns replaced by Soviet-made weapons. In May 1976, Błyskawica became a museum ship in Gdynia.
