Overview
In September 1934, a competition was announced for the design of a new destroyer for the German navy. The best was recognized as the Deutsche Werke project, which formed the basis for the Type 1934 destroyers. The displacement significantly exceeded 2,000 tons, although officially stated as 1,625 tons. The lead destroyer, Leberecht Maas, was built at the Deutsche Werke shipyard in Kiel. At the start of World War II, the destroyer participated in the blockade of the Polish coast and mine-laying in the North Sea. In February 1940, during Operation Wikinger, Leberecht Maas was mistakenly attacked by Luftwaffe bombers and sank.
