Overview
The Akatsuki-class destroyer project was based on the Fubuki class, featuring a slightly shorter hull and reduced displacement. By increasing boiler steam production, it was possible to reduce their total number from four to three. The lead ship of the class, Akatsuki, was built in Sasebo. Upon commissioning, the destroyer was assigned to the 6th Destroyer Division. During World War II, the ship covered Japanese landings in Malaya, the Dutch East Indies, and the Philippines, and participated in the Solomon Islands campaign. The destroyer was involved in the "Tokyo Express" runs—reinforcement deliveries by light combat vessels. Akatsuki was sunk by naval gunfire from a U.S. Navy cruiser and destroyer task force in the Battle of Cape Esperance on October 13, 1942.
