Overview
In June-July 1939, the construction of twelve Type 1936B destroyers was ordered as part of the German fleet modernization program. With the start of World War II, ten ships of this type were first canceled, and in 1940–41, seven of them were re-ordered as Type 1936A (Mob) destroyers. The destroyers received 150 mm gun mounts that were previously intended for battlecruiser-raiders. The lead ship of the type, Z-31, was built at the Deschimag shipyard in Bremen. After crew training, the ship was transferred to Norway. In December 1942, the destroyer participated in the Battle of the Barents Sea during the hunt for convoy JW-51B. In September 1943, the ship participated in the raid on Spitsbergen; in October 1944—in the transport of German troops from Finland to Norway. In January 1945, the destroyer sustained heavy damage in a battle with British cruisers. After the war, Z-31 was transferred to France as reparations and renamed Marceau.
