Overview
In 1938, Brazil ordered a series of six modern destroyers from Great Britain. However, due to the outbreak of World War II, Great Britain requisitioned these destroyers for the needs of its own fleet. As a result, the Brazilians decided to build the ships according to the transferred documentation, but at their own shipyards. In 1940, six destroyers were laid down, but due to a weak logistical base and lack of experience, the construction was delayed. The ships were completed after World War II with American assistance. The original project underwent a number of changes: the caliber of the armament was changed from 120 mm to 127 mm, and the funnels were combined into one. The steam turbines were manufactured at American plants. The lead ship of the class, Acre, was built at the Naval Arsenal shipyards in Rio de Janeiro. The ship received turbines produced by General Electric. In the early 1960s, the destroyer participated in the conflict between Brazil and France over lobster fishing.
