Overview

In the 1920s, several series of torpedo boats were built for the Reichsmarine to replace obsolete World War I ships. The first series were improved versions of World War I torpedo boats, with displacement not exceeding 1,000 tons. The development of these ships was the Type 39, which was radically enhanced compared to its predecessors. The lead ship of the type, T-22, was built at the Schichau shipyard in Elbing in March 1939. After training completion, the ship was transferred to France, where in 1942–43 it participated in patrol operations in the Bay of Biscay. During a battle in the English Channel in October 1943, T-22 sank the British escort destroyer HMS Limbourne. In December of the same year, the destroyer participated in the Battle of the Bay of Biscay against the British cruisers Glasgow and Enterprise. In June 1944, T-22 was transferred to the Baltic. On the night of August 17–18, the destroyer hit mines in the Narva Bay and sank.
