Overview
The Mutsuki-class destroyers were built to an improved design based on the Kamikaze class. These new ships became the last type of Japanese destroyers with a torpedo launcher mounted forward of the bridge superstructure. Furthermore, the torpedo launchers became triple-tube mounts, which allowed their number to be reduced while maintaining the same number of torpedoes in a broadside salvo, and the torpedo caliber was increased to 610 mm. The lead ship of the class, Mutsuki, was built in Sasebo. The destroyer participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. In December 1941, serving as the flagship of the 30th Destroyer Division, it took part in the unsuccessful landing on Wake Island, and in 1942—in landings on the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. The ship was sunk by American land-based aircraft as a result of a bomb hit near the Solomon Islands on August 24, 1942.
