Overview
To escort the Amagi-class battlecruisers, Japan built a series of large destroyers. Compared to their predecessors, the Minekaze class featured increased size, a greater number of guns, and the placement of the forward torpedo mount behind the forecastle break. These new ships became the first mass-produced Japanese destroyers equipped with geared turbines. The lead ship of the class, Minekaze, was built in Maizuru. Upon entering service, the ship was assigned to the 2nd Destroyer Division, which in the 1930s formed the escort for the aircraft carrier Akagi. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Minekaze patrolled the Chinese coast. In World War II, the by-then obsolete ship participated in patrol and escort operations in the East China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean. The destroyer Minekaze was torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine USS Pogy off the coast of Taiwan on February 10, 1944.
