Overview
The second series of the Minekaze-class destroyers, also known as the Kamikaze class, differed from its predecessors in its draft, which was increased to improve seaworthiness. The lead ship of the series was built in Nagasaki at the Mitsubishi shipyard. In August 1928, the destroyer was named Kamikaze. During World War II, the ship participated in the Aleutian Islands campaign and escorted convoys to the Kuril Islands. In January 1945, the destroyer was transferred to the Combined Fleet, after which it escorted the Ise-class battleships on their voyage from Singapore to Japan and then patrolled the Malay coast. In October 1945, the ship was decommissioned and used as a transport for demobilized Japanese soldiers. The destroyer ran aground off Cape Omaezaki on June 7, 1946, and was scrapped the following year.
