Overview
An experimental destroyer with an exceptionally powerful propulsion system, as well as enhanced anti-aircraft and torpedo armament. The planned performance improvements were to be achieved through new boilers with higher steam parameters, developed based on the experience of German designers. Shimakaze was intended to be the lead ship in a series of 16 destroyers, but ultimately remained the only ship of its class ever built. The destroyer Shimakaze was built in Maizuru. During World War II, the ship participated in the evacuation of the Aleutian Islands, escorted convoys, and took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. During the Battle of Ormoc Bay on November 11, 1944, the destroyer Shimakaze was sunk by American carrier-based aircraft.
