Overview
CL-154 class cruisers were designed in the USA as a further development of the Atlanta-class cruisers. They were to differ from their predecessors by an enlarged hull and the replacement of the main battery guns with new 5-inch/54 caliber guns. The new gun had a higher rate of fire, greater range, and heavier shells. Design began with a sketch proposed in June 1942, and the last preliminary design dates from December 1944. The construction of six cruisers was planned, and they were even assigned hull numbers, but cuts in the naval budget in March 1945 canceled these plans. If they had been completed, it is not excluded that some cruisers would have been transferred to the Navy of the Republic of Korea: in 1955–60, this country purchased 42 warships of various classes from the USA, and in the 1960s–70s, Fletcher, Gearing, and Allen M. Sumner class destroyers entered the Korean fleet.
