Overview
Shortly before the start of World War II, Japan learned that the United States had begun designing large cruisers of the Alaska class. Almost immediately, Japanese designers began work on a ship of this class to counter the American cruisers. The ships of the project were architecturally similar to the Yamato-class battleships and carried nine of the latest 310-mm guns in three turrets. Development was halted in November 1941 and finally canceled after the Battle of Midway.
