Overview
In the early 20th century, naval theorists in the USA and Great Britain simultaneously developed concepts of battleships armed only with large-caliber guns. The first such ship was the British Dreadnought, built in 1906; the Americans presented their version of a battleship — in 1910. After commissioning, USS South Carolina was assigned to the Atlantic Fleet. Subsequently, she defended US interests during the Mexican Revolution and took part in the occupation of Veracruz. During World War I, the battleship escorted troop convoys to France, and after the war, transported troops back to America. In December 1922, under the Washington Naval Treaty, South Carolina was decommissioned from the fleet.
