Overview
Even during the Russo-Japanese War, Japan began constructing ships armed only with large-caliber guns. The first dreadnoughts were intended to be the Satsuma-class battleships, but due to a shortage of 305 mm guns, two 254 mm barrels were installed in the broadside turrets of these ships. The further development of the Satsuma class were the two Kawachi-class ships, equipped with six main battery turrets in a rhomboid arrangement. Kawachi, the lead ship of the class, was built in Yokosuka. During World War I, the ship participated in the Siege of Qingdao. Kawachi was lost due to an explosion in the forward turret's magazine in Tokuyama Bay on July 12, 1918.
