Overview
In 1903, at the suggestion of Kaiser Wilhelm II, studies began for a new armored ship with 283 mm guns. The design requirements changed several times, particularly due to emerging information about new British battleships of the Lord Nelson class. In April 1906, the final version was approved, and battleships were ordered immediately. SMS Nassau was built at the Wilhelmshaven shipyard and became Germany's first dreadnought. After the start of World War I, Nassau covered Franz von Hipper's raid on Scarborough and in August 1915 participated in an attempt to break into the Gulf of Riga. During the Battle of Jutland, Nassau, together with Thuringen, sank the British cruiser Black Prince. After World War I, the battleship was transferred to Japan as part of reparations.
