Overview
A diesel-electric submarine (Series IX, Type S—'Srednyaya'), intended for operations in the open ocean. The lead submarine of the project. The submarine was built at Shipbuilding Plant No. 189 named after Ordzhonikidze in Leningrad and entered service with the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. It participated in combat sorties during the Soviet-Finnish War. For combat successes and the crew's courage, it was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, and the commander received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, S-1 required serious repairs and was not operational. The submarine was scuttled by the crew during the retreat—shells destroyed the internal instruments and mechanisms but could not breach the pressure hull. The Germans raised the submarine and towed it to Kiel. The former S-1 was used as an experimental vessel to study underwater explosions and finally sank in August 1943.
