Overview
The Saphir-class submarine minelayers were designed to lay mines from underwater, for which shaft-type mine tubes were installed in the light hull. Saphir, the lead submarine of the class, was built in Toulon. At the start of World War II, the submarine operated in the Mediterranean, laying mines and conducting patrols. After France's exit from the war, the submarine was in Bizerte, and after the occupation of Tunisia, it was transferred to the Italian fleet. The submarine was renamed FR112 and began to be converted into a submarine transport in the port of Naples. However, after Italy's surrender, German forces captured the former Saphir and blew it up on September 15, 1943, due to the impracticality of using the already half-rebuilt hull.
