Overview
The Cachalot-class project was influenced by the characteristics of the German submarine U-135 and the limitations of the London Naval Treaty. Subsequently, the Cachalot-class served as the basis for the designs of all American submarines of World War II. For the first time in the US Navy, welding was extensively used in the construction of a submarine. USS Cachalot was in Pearl Harbor when World War II began. The submarine made three war patrols, damaging a Japanese tanker.
