Overview
The Italian battleship Giulio Cesare surrendered to Allied forces in 1943 and was transferred to the USSR as reparations after World War II. In the Soviet fleet, the ship was renamed 'Novorossiysk.' The ship was in unsatisfactory technical condition, and in the following years, extensive repair and modernization work was performed on it. Meanwhile, 'Novorossiysk' participated in maneuvers as the squadron flagship and performed combat training tasks. In May 1955, the ship joined the Black Sea Fleet. On October 29, while the battleship was in Sevastopol Bay, an explosion occurred under its hull, and a few hours later, 'Novorossiysk' sank. 617 people died in the tragedy. The cause of the explosion was never determined, with the most popular theory being the detonation of a German mine from World War II.
