Overview
USS Arizona, the second Pennsylvania-class battleship, was laid down in March 1914 and commissioned two years later. During World War I, she was part of the 8th Battleship Division. Later, she was transferred to the Pacific Fleet and mainly participated in exercises in the 1920s and 1930s. During the Pearl Harbor raid, she was hit by several bombs, causing an explosion in her magazines, leading to the ship's sinking and the death of over 1,000 crew members. A national memorial was opened at the site of the tragedy in 1962.
