Overview

The battleships built under the 1912 program were initially intended to repeat the Fusō class. However, during the design process, changes were made to the blueprints, incorporating lessons learned from the construction of their predecessors and new requirements from the naval staff. The main difference was the new arrangement of the artillery, which simplified fire control. Ise was built in Kobe at the Kawasaki shipyard. The ship did not see combat in World War I but participated in the intervention in Soviet Russia. During its modernization in the 1930s, the ship's armor and the power of its propulsion plant were enhanced. By the beginning of World War II, the battleship was obsolete and saw almost no action in the Pacific. Following the loss of carriers in the Battle of Midway, Ise was rebuilt into a hybrid battleship-carrier: the aft group of turrets was replaced with a flight deck. In 1944, Ise participated in the Battle of Cape Engaño, and in 1945, it transported strategic cargo from China to Japan. In July 1945, the ship was sunk by American bombers near Ondo Seto Island.
