Overview
In 1910, it became clear that future battleships of England, the USA, and other countries would have armament of more than 305 mm caliber. After a period of studies and discussions, a project for a ship armed with eight 380 mm guns in four turrets was approved. SMS Bayern, the lead ship of the series, was built in Kiel and entered service shortly after the Battle of Jutland. During World War I, the battleship participated in patrol and raid operations, but its only combat action was Operation Albion—the breakthrough of the Moonsund positions held by the Russian army and fleet. In October 1917, during Operation Albion, Bayern hit a mine, sustaining light damage. After Germany's capitulation, Bayern, along with the rest of the High Seas Fleet, moved to Scapa Flow, where it was scuttled by its crew on June 21, 1919.
