Overview

Mutsu, the second battleship of the Nagato class, was built in Yokosuka and commissioned just as the Washington Conference had begun. The United States insisted on the ship being decommissioned, but the Japanese managed to preserve it: one of the arguments was that part of the funds for its construction had been collected by schoolchildren from all over the country. From 1934 to 1936, like all Japanese battleships, Mutsu underwent a major modernization with enhanced armor. The ship participated in World War II: it covered the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, took part in the Battle of Midway and the battles around the Solomon Islands in 1942. On June 8, 1943, Mutsu was lost in Hashirajima harbor due to an explosion in the third turret's magazine.
