Overview
The construction of a large number of destroyers with almost no cruisers led to a debate in the US Navy about the need to produce destroyer leaders. Some officers proposed creating an intermediate class of ship combining cruiser and destroyer features. After several sketches, a 2,200-ton destroyer leader armed with 127 mm guns was proposed. The construction of Omaha-class cruisers ultimately eliminated the need for a destroyer leader, and the construction of this type was abandoned.
