Overview
German naval doctrine envisaged raider actions by large ships in the Atlantic against British trade and supply. For this purpose, from the late 1920s–early 1930s, ships were developed, including aircraft-carrying ones with cruiser and battleship artillery armament. Among the assumed targets for such ships were British aircraft carriers. The Atlantik-Flugzeugkreuzer A-III project envisaged the installation of two triple turrets with large-caliber guns, and in terms of armor, such a ship was to correspond to battleships. Further development of the hybrid aircraft carrier/battleship concept could have been based on the H-39 class battleships laid down in 1939, whose dimensions approximated the A-III project.
