Overview
In January 1930, the USSR government restored funding for naval shipbuilding, and the leadership of the Naval Forces of the Red Army planned the construction of six destroyer leaders. The 1929 project was taken as the basis, which was revised to increase speed. By the end of 1930, the technical project, numbered 1, was completed. The Central Design Bureau for Special Shipbuilding—TsKBS-1—was specially created for the design of new ships. 'Leningrad' was built at Plant No. 190 named after Zhdanov in Leningrad. During the Soviet-Finnish War, the leader participated in shelling Finnish positions and supporting landing operations. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, 'Leningrad' engaged in mine-laying, participated in the defense of Tallinn, the Tallinn evacuation, the evacuation of the Hanko naval base, and the defense of Leningrad.
