Overview
Le Terrible, a Le Fantasque-class destroyer, was laid down in Caen in December 1931, after which it was towed to Nantes for completion. In 1936, the ship, together with its sister ships Le Fantasque and L'Audacieux, was assigned to the 10th Light Division as part of the 2nd Light Squadron in Brest. In 1939, the 10th Division became part of the 'Raiding Force' (French: Force de raid). Throughout the year, the destroyer was engaged in convoy escort and searching for German raiders in the Atlantic. In the spring of 1940, the Force de Raid was transferred to Algeria, where on July 3, the French base Mers-el-Kébir was attacked by the British Royal Navy. Le Terrible escorted the battlecruiser Strasbourg to Toulon, which managed to escape from the British ships. In 1942, the destroyer was transferred to Dakar, where in November it defected to the 'Free France'. As part of its fleet, the ship participated in the landings in Italy (1943) and Southern France (1944). After the war, Le Terrible was placed in reserve.
