Overview
The further development of the Atlanta-class cruisers was to be the CL-154 project, which envisaged an enlarged hull, replacement of the main battery guns with 5-inch/54 caliber guns with high rate of fire, long range, and heavy shells. The first sketch was proposed in June 1942, and the final project was ready in December 1944. Six cruisers were planned for construction and had already received hull numbers. However, due to cuts in the naval budget in March 1945, the project was never realized. If these ships had been completed, some of them could have been transferred to the Navy of the Republic of China, which actively acquired US-built destroyers of the Benson, Gleaves, Bristol, Allen M. Sumner, Gearing, and Kidd classes in the 1950s–80s.
