Overview
After the end of World War II, countries in South America began actively modernizing their naval forces. They ordered new ships to replace outdated ones, primarily from the United States and the United Kingdom. Colombia, however, turned to Sweden, where modern Halland-class destroyers had just been built. The Colombian version of the destroyer received a third main-caliber gun turret in place of the forward 57-mm mount. To accommodate anti-aircraft armament, one anti-submarine mortar had to be sacrificed, and the Dutch-produced electronic equipment was more advanced than that on the Swedish ships. The destroyer 20 de Julio was built at the Kockums shipyard in Malmö. During its 26 years of service, the ship participated in several exercises, including ones involving the U.S. Navy.
