Overview
During the development of the Allen M. Sumner and Gearing-class destroyers, options were considered for arming the ships with 127 mm guns in single or twin mounts. However, it was impossible to fit these guns on the existing hull: there would not have been enough space for the corresponding equipment and systems, and there was no time to design a new ship. Additionally, replacing the 40 mm Bofors guns with automatic 76 mm guns would have led to a noticeable increase in displacement, so this development path was abandoned.
