Shigure, one of ten Shiratsuyu-class destroyers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy, had built up a distinguished service record by the time she was sunk by an American submarine in JanuaryĀ 1945. During the Pacific War, she earned a reputation for being "lucky" or "unsinkable" after emerging from several battles with no damage and twice surviving as the sole ship of a Japanese force.
