Overview
Philips van Almonde was the fourth and final ship of the Gerard Callenburgh class destroyers, a class intended to modernize the Dutch destroyer force in response to the increasingly large and capable destroyers entering service with other navies. Laid down in March 1939, the ship was destroyed on her slipway during the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940. The demolition effort was so thorough that the Germans chose to scrap the remains rather than attempt to complete the vessel.
