Overview
Z-44, a Type 1936B destroyer, was built at the Deschimag shipyard in Bremen. The ship's construction proceeded slowly, as the main efforts of German shipbuilders were directed towards the construction and repair of submarines. In July 1944, work was suspended, and five days later, Z-44 was sunk at the fitting-out pier as a result of a British bomber raid on Bremen. The destroyer was raised and partially dismantled for spare parts to repair Z-39. The completion of the ship was canceled in September 1944 when the destroyer's stern broke off.
