Overview

After the end of the Russo-Japanese War and the assimilation of its lessons, Japan adopted the "Eight-Eight" plan, which called for the navy to consist of eight battleships and eight high-speed armored cruisers. This plan later underwent a series of changes; notably, the armored cruisers were replaced by battlecruisers. Japan viewed America as a likely adversary in a naval war. Therefore, when World War I began and the United States announced its naval expansion plans, Japan increased funding for the construction of new ships. Between 1916 and 1918, around twenty preliminary design variants were developed, representing an evolution of the Kongō-class. The most detailed was the project designated B-62, which included eight variants of a ship with four twin-gun main battery turrets. It was planned to build two ships of this type. The project was later modified and led to the development of the Amagi-class ships.
