Overview
After the United States announced an ambitious shipbuilding program in 1919, Japan revised its fleet development plans: it required the construction of four more battleships and four battlecruisers. Naval architect Yuzuru Hiraga developed thirteen preliminary design options for ships of these classes. The main battleship design chosen was a variant with 410mm artillery in five twin-gun turrets — essentially an enhanced version of the Amagi-class battlecruisers. The first two ships were ordered in October 1921, but by February of the following year, preparations for construction were halted due to the Washington Naval Conference, and in 1924, construction was definitively canceled.
