Overview
Yūdachi, a Shiratsuyu-class destroyer, was built in Sasebo. During World War II, the ship escorted troop transports during the invasions of the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies, and participated in the Battle of the Java Sea and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. In September 1942, the destroyer began running supply runs on the route to Guadalcanal. During the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the ship lost power due to damage inflicted by the destroyer USS Sterett and was abandoned by its crew. The abandoned Yūdachi was finished off by gunfire from the cruiser USS Portland southeast of Savo Island.
