Overview
The Shiratsuyu-class destroyers were built to an improved design based on the Hatsuharu class. The new ships had an increased draft and were armed with two quadruple torpedo launchers. The lead ship of the class, Shiratsuyu, was built in Sasebo. Upon commissioning, the destroyer joined the 27th Destroyer Division. During World War II, the ship escorted convoys in the western Pacific, participated in the Battle of Midway, the campaigns in the Solomon and Marshall Islands, the First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, and the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay. On June 14, 1944, near the Surigao Strait, Shiratsuyu collided with the tanker Seiyo Maru and sank due to the damage sustained.
