Overview
USS William R. Rush, a Gearing-class destroyer, was laid down in Newark, New Jersey in October 1944, launched in July 1945, and commissioned in September of the same year—after World War II had ended. From 1945–50, USS William R. Rush served as an escort for USS Ranger and participated in US fleet deployments off Europe. In 1951, the destroyer saw action in the Korean War, shelling North Korean railway lines. In 1964, the ship was modernized under the FRAM program. Until 1978, the destroyer actively participated in US Navy operations worldwide, completing several circumnavigations during this time. In 1978, USS William R. Rush was transferred to the South Korean Navy, where it served until 1999 before becoming a museum ship. In 2016, the former William R. Rush was scrapped.
