Overview
To augment the Japanese fleet, the construction of two cruisers based on the Mogami-class design was planned. To improve protection and stability, the design omitted the fifth turret, and the remaining four were relocated to the bow. This allowed for a reduction in the length of the armored belt, lightening the hull and ends of the ship, which in turn improved seakeeping qualities. The freed-up stern section allowed for the placement of seaplanes. The lead ship of the class, the Tone, was built in Nagasaki. In 1941, the cruiser participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor and the invasion of Wake Island. In 1942, the Tone covered landings at Rabaul, participated in the Battle of the Java Sea, the Indian Ocean raid, the Battle of Midway, as well as the battles of the Eastern Solomons and the Santa Cruz Islands. In 1944, the ship fought in the Philippine Sea and in Leyte Gulf. The cruiser Tone was sunk in Kure Harbor during an American bomber raid on July 24, 1945.
